Anointing of the Sick

“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.”  CCC, 1499

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is by appointment. You may request this sacrament for yourself or for a sick family member by speaking to the parish priest.

If you have a close relative in residential care, or if you are moving into residential care yourself, and would like Catholic spiritual care, it is strongly advised that you let the local parish priest know directly. Due to data protection legislation, care providers are no longer at liberty to share personal information with third parties, including the local priest.

It is not necessary to wait until the last moments of life before calling the priest and requesting the sacrament. Before a serious operation, upon receiving a difficult diagnosis, at the onset of a degenerative illness – all of these would be appropriate situations to request this sacrament of healing.
